"Consider the differences between a machine and a human being" - Misao Jo, 1913 - 2018, founder of SAORI weaving

"For me, the above slogan embodies the essence of the hand crafted object. Of course a machine can do something fast, without mistakes, endlessly identical. But can a machine produce something beautiful, playful or innovative? How can we understand our surroundings when they become detached from nature and the simple techniques practised by our forefathers' skilful hands? Let us learn to "read" the weaver's joy of a beautiful and useful object once again. In saori weaving, no two items are the same, every cloth is an expression of the individual who made it." - Erna Janine
